The most authoritative and comprehensive information on the Kryder family that we have found is: HISTORY of the KRYDER FAMILY volumes I and II by Edward Hemington Kryder.



In his introduction, Edward writes that “….John Kryder, founder of the Kryder family in America,…was born in Alsace,” but that he was of Swiss (not German) origin. Edward is also careful to note that the surname “…derives from the agricultural term Gerüter, that is, one who roots out or clears or plows in order to cultivate a piece of land.”
Note that this is in marked contrast to those who relate the name to the German kreide or chalk.
